Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has petitioned the Police Service Commission (PSC) over what he described as the unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and serial violations of the Police Act by some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command.
The petition comes in the wake of a violent attack on a transition committee meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna, where suspected political thugs invaded the venue, vandalized property, leaving several people injured.
Operatives on the ground were alleged of standing by and failing to intervene, a development El-Rufai said highlighted a pattern of complicity and dereliction of duty since the resumption of the current Commissioner of Police on December 30, 2024.
In his submission to the PSC, El-Rufai detailed the particulars of his complaint and urged the commission to launch an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into what he termed the unlawful and unconstitutional actions of the Commissioner and other officers of the command.
He noted that he had earlier written to the Inspector-General of Police on the “egregiously unlawful acts” of some officers in Kaduna before escalating the matter to the commission.
“I am writing out of concern that the Nigerian Police, warts and all, is the only frontline law enforcement institution that we have,” El-Rufai stated in the petition signed by his Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye.
“The duty of all citizens is not only to support it at every level, but also to ensure that the Commission is provided opportunities to deliver on its regulatory powers to enforce discipline and promote sound and ethical conduct by all police officers at all times.
“This laudable goal can only be attained if the Commission’s attention is continuously drawn to any egregious conduct of some bad eggs that serve interests other than those conferred by law in Section 4 of the Police Act, 2020. Such conduct thereby negatively affects the image of the Police and undermines public confidence in its leadership”, he said.
The petition follows a chain of escalating confrontations between El-Rufai, the ADC, and the police.
On September 4, the Kaduna State Police Command sealed the ADC secretariat in Kaduna and subsequently invited El-Rufai and six ADC leaders for questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department over alleged conspiracy, incitement, and disturbance of public peace.
The development sparked criticism from El-Rufai, who described the action as unconstitutional and vowed to challenge it legally, even up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
