Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the administration of Governor Uba Sani of sponsoring suspected thugs who invaded an African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition meeting in Kaduna on Saturday.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, El-Rufai dismissed suggestions that he orchestrated the disruption.
“It is very stupid for anyone to think I would invite thugs to invade an event of my party,” he said.
The former governor alleged that police officers on duty provided cover for the attackers.
“The police were there, I don’t know what they are now investigating. They knew what happened, they provided cover for the thugs to do what they did, so the thugs were government-sponsored. We know them, we know the police officers that were there,” he stated.
El-Rufai directly blamed the state government for the violence.
“The government of Kaduna State was behind it. I will submit my evidence to the Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police, if they care to take action,” he said.
The attack reportedly occurred during the inauguration of an opposition transition committee in Kaduna, when hoodlums armed with cutlasses, clubs, and stones descended on participants, injuring several people and damaging vehicles.
The former governor further disclosed that he would file a petition with the Inspector General of Police over the incident.
On broader issues, El-Rufai addressed criticisms of his leadership style, dismissing claims that he is a religious fundamentalist or hostile to Southern Kaduna communities.
“I don’t care. The people who think I am a fundamentalist don’t know me; they have never met me. Frankly, the reason why my enemies are vehement at hating me is because I don’t care what they think. Those who work with me know me,” he said.
Responding to perceptions in parts of Southern Kaduna, he added: “They can think what they think. I don’t tolerate nonsense; governance is not a joke. When you’re governing 10 million people as I did in Kaduna, you must not discriminate between A and B. Nobody can blackmail me that because he is a Christian, the law doesn’t apply to him.”
He explained that some communities felt entitled to defy the law but insisted he dealt with such situations firmly, while also pointing out that some of his closest aides were from Southern Kaduna.
The former governor also stated that he had no personal fallout with Governor Uba Sani but clarified the nature of their relationship.
“I’ve not fallen out with the governor. No, he is not my friend. He was my boy, my mentee. We have not fallen out. I still don’t speak with him,” El-Rufai said.
He, however, noted that while he takes pride in mentoring and elevating people, he would not remain silent when they deviate from the right path.
“My biggest pride in life is that I have encouraged and elevated many people to greatness, some even greater than me. But when a person derails, when he doesn’t do the right thing, because I contributed to getting him there, I am prohibited from commenting? Is that what the country has become?” he asked.
El-Rufai, who has since dissociated himself from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is a key figure in the opposition coalition that adopted the ADC as its political platform in Kaduna. He insisted that he has evidence linking the state government to the recent attack and vowed to present it to the appropriate authorities.
