The Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has commenced a plea bargain process and is inviting legal practitioners to submit requests for their Defendant clients on or before 31st of May, 2020.

In a Notice made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), the Ministry said it is part of the ongoing efforts to decongest the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre.

The Notice reads in part:

“2) This initiative is in accordance with the provisions of Sections 75 & 76 of the Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2014.

” 3) Pursuant to the powers conferred on me by Section 211 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Section 70 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ekiti State, 2014.”

The Hon. Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice of the State, Olawale Fapohunda, therefore, invites interested Legal Practitioners representing Defendants in criminal matters before the High Courts and Magistrate Courts in Ekiti State to submit requests for Plea Bargain.

In the objective of the process, the Notice said it “is to enable the State and defendants awaiting trial agree on a framework for a speedy conclusion of trials.”
