In furtherance of the Ekiti State Government’s naming and shaming of convicted sex offenders policy, the state’s Ministry of Justice, on Sunday, publicly published the identities of two convicted sex offenders.

According to the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda SAN, it was the set of publication of sex offenders in 2022 and said the state government had in recent times expressed concern about the increasing cases of sexual violence in the state.

The convicted sex offenders who were publicly name-shamed are Adebamigbe Samuel, a 37-year-old native of Ikere-Ekiti who was formerly a resident of no 37, Ajebamidele Area, Ado-Ekiti and Dayo Asiwaju a 27-year-old native of Ikoro-Ekiti, formerly a resident in Ikoyi street, Ikere-Ekiti.

Adebamigbe is currently serving a life sentence in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado-Ekiti, for the rape of 13-year-old girl and has his name registered in the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice sex offenders’ register.

Asiwaju on the other hand is also currently serving a life sentence in the Nigeria correctional centre, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and also has his name registered in the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice Sex Offenders’ Register.

Aside from publicly shaming sex offenders, other measures put in place by the Ekiti State government include disqualification of convicted sex offenders from applying for Prerogative of Mercy, compulsory psychiatric tests for offenders in cases where the victim is a minor and the pasting of posters of sex offenders in their last place of abode or prominent places in their local government headquarters.

These publications are few out of many convicted sex offenders who have been publicly name-shamed in the past few years by the Ekiti State Government through the state’s Ministry of Justice.
