Indications have emerged that the Ekiti State House of Assembly may be working towards enacting a law providing monthly life pensions for legislators.

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly on April 25 passed a bill that would enable past and serving members to receive monthly life pensions from the government.

Members reportedly agreed and approved N500,000 post-service monthly pension for the speakers of the Assembly, while deputy speakers would receive N200,000, and other members would get N100,000 each.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that Ekiti State House of Assembly had started considering moves towards sending a similar bill to Governor Kayode Fayemi.

It was learnt that the issue which is already at the parliamentary stage had been discussed by the lawmakers.

The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan, who spoke with our correspondent from Johannesburg, South Africa on the telephone on Wednesday, confirmed the move.

He said, “There is no such law in Ekiti as we speak but it is under consideration because we have debated it and members are considering it.”
