Authorities in Egypt have arrested several people over an alleged scheme involving the impersonation of judges and the staging of fake court scenes to defraud members of the public.

Egypt’s Ministry of Interior said the alleged scam involved fabricated courtroom scenes and the impersonation of a judge on social media.

According to the ministry, the main suspects, an unemployed man and a student residing in Cairo and Giza, were detained after investigations into claims that citizens had been deceived into parting with money.

The ministry said that, during questioning, the suspects confessed to forming a criminal gang that collected money from people by falsely claiming they could help them secure housing allocations from government agencies.

They were also said to have admitted staging fake court scenes with the assistance of others.

State-owned newspaper, Al-Ahram, reported that several suspects believed to have participated in the alleged scheme had been arrested and referred for an expedited criminal trial.

The matter reportedly came to light after authorities opened an investigation into a complaint by a man who said he had been defrauded by someone falsely presenting himself as a judge.

Following the complaint, the main suspect was arrested, while police reportedly recovered a firearm, a judicial sash and identity cards bearing a fake judicial title.

The suspect was also said to have admitted taking photos and recording videos inside a courthouse while wearing the judicial sash in order to strengthen his false claim and appear credible to victims.

According to the report, he allegedly received assistance from a second suspect and some court employees.

The second main suspect was also reported to have confessed to participating in the filming and publication of the images and videos while claiming on social media to be a judge.

Al-Ahram added that court employees were also detained and questioned. They reportedly claimed that the main suspect had told them he worked for one of Egypt’s judicial authorities.

The suspects are now expected to face criminal proceedings over the alleged impersonation, staged judicial scenes and fraud scheme.
