The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has elected its first female president in its history.

Efua Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer and wife of former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joe Ghartey, clinched the top position in a closely watched election held at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The hotly contested race saw Mrs. Ghartey emerge victorious with 1,208 votes, surpassing her closest competitor, Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes. This landmark victory comes after two previous unsuccessful bids for the presidency, showcasing Mrs. Ghartey’s persistence and the changing landscape of Ghana’s legal profession.

Mrs. Ghartey, who co-founded the law firm Ghartey & Ghartey with her husband in 1994, expressed both humility and joy in her acceptance speech. “I am humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association,” she stated, acknowledging the historic nature of her election.

The new GBA President-elect pledged to protect the legal profession and assured members that their trust in female leadership would not be misplaced. “We shall make you proud. We shall make sure that you never regret this choice,” Mrs. Ghartey promised. She also called for continued support from the association’s members, saying, “What we ask for moving forward is that not only do you pray for us but also hold our hands.”
