The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP – Esan North-East II), has resigned from her position, citing the minority status of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House.

Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, announced her resignation during plenary on Monday, May 20, in Benin City, the state capital.

In her resignation address, she explained that stepping aside was in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies across the state.

“This decision is to promote fairness and allow the Assembly to function smoothly in light of the recent political realignment,” she stated.

The former Deputy Speaker thanked the leadership and members of the PDP for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed her commitment to her constituents.

Her resignation followed a wave of defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the defection of the Speaker of the House, which left the PDP in the minority.

In response to her resignation, members of the House took turns to commend Oligbi-Edeko for her dedication, integrity, and passionate service during her time as Deputy Speaker. Many lawmakers described her as a selfless leader whose contributions enriched the legislative process.

Following her exit, Hon. Osamwonyi Atu (APC – Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the House.

Immediately after the election, the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC – Esan West), moved a motion that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker be accorded to Hon. Oligbi-Edeko. The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Charity Airobarueghian (PDP – Ovia North-East I), and adopted through a unanimous voice vote.

Oligbi-Edeko pledged her continued support to the Assembly and assured her constituents of her unwavering commitment to their welfare.
