The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that while the electronic Case Management and Reporting (e-CMR) system remains in effect, the enforcement initially scheduled to commence on July 29, 2024, has been temporarily suspended.

The decision to postpone the enforcement comes as an effort to provide ample opportunity for mass enlightenment and education of all citizens and residents on the process, benefits, and effectiveness of the e-CMR in solving the challenge of vehicle-related crimes and protecting individual and corporate vehicle ownership.

In a statement released by the Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, it was clarified that the suspension only applies to the enforcement process and not the entire e-CMR system. This clarification comes in response to some media outlets incorrectly reporting that the e-CMR has been suspended entirely.

The Nigeria Police maintain that the e-CMR is crucial in providing a firsthand database for curbing vehicular crimes, as dedicated officers can access real-time comprehensive data of every vehicle on their tablets. The system is also designed to prevent multiple registrations of vehicles and serves as a database to collate biometric and other data of vehicle owners and individuals, adding value to the national database and incident report portal generated from other ministries, departments, and agencies towards general security.

The IGP emphasizes that genuine car owners will appreciate the benefits of the e-CMR, as it offers a cost-effective solution for vehicle tracking and security, with registration fees being far less than the cost of installing a tracker on a vehicle.

The Nigeria Police urge the public to take advantage of the postponement of enforcement to educate themselves on the e-CMR system and its numerous benefits. Vehicle owners can obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng, and technical support is available at cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.
