The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadau, on Thursday addressed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

Both Bayero and Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi are laying claim to the revered stool of the Emir of Kano.

The recognition comes amidst a contentious battle between Bayero and Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, both of whom claim the revered position. The controversy began in March 2020 when former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Sanusi and named Bayero as the new Emir. However, four years later, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reversed the decision, sacking Bayero and reinstating Sanusi.

Bayero, who was out of state when his sack was announced, returned to Kano and took up residence in the mini palace at Nasarawa, where he has been holding court. In response, Governor Yusuf ordered Bayero’s immediate arrest, but security was instead heightened at the mini palace, fueling speculation that Bayero had federal backing.

Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo had accused Ribadu of facilitating Bayero’s return by providing him with two private jets, an allegation Ribadu denied while threatening legal action. Gwarzo later recanted his statement following a demand for an apology from Ribadu’s counsel, Aliyu & Musa Chambers.

As the battle for control of the emirate shifted to the courts, with both camps filing suits challenging one another, Ribadu’s recognition of Bayero as the Emir of Kano during the NAN lecture elicited a thunderous applause from the audience.

The development has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with supporters of Bayero, such as Rabiu Uba Danzainab, hailing Ribadu’s acknowledgment. However, others have questioned the legitimacy of the recognition, with one user, @StudentYahaya, stating that “only the court of a competent jurisdiction can do so, not Ribadu.”

The ongoing dispute over the Emir of Kano stool continues to be a contentious issue, with the final resolution likely to be determined by the courts.
