The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Human Rights Committee Chairman lafia Branch, Mohammed Danjuma, has strongly condemned the Nigerian military for flouting a court order in Nasarawa State.

On September 9, 2025, a High Court in Nasarawa, sitting on vacation, had ordered the immediate production of Alhaji Ahmadu Ahijo before the court pursuant to Section 32 of the Nasarawa State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2018. Ahijo had been held in detention for eight days without trial for an alleged mischief offence.

While the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Doma complied with the order and handed Ahijo to the duty police officers, the matter took a shocking turn. Major Salmanu of the 123 Special Forces Battalion, Doma, reportedly arrived with two truckloads of soldiers, blocked the entrance to the police headquarters, and abducted Ahijo, taking him directly to the military barracks.

Sources indicate that the Major had reported the alleged mischief to the police but, upon learning that the case would proceed to court, decided to seize the defendant forcibly, vowing to handle the matter “the military way.”

Describing the act as “draconian, anti-democratic, and a violation of the rule of law,” NBA Human Rights Committee Chairman Mohammed Danjuma expressed outrage at the blatant disobedience of a lawful court order.

The NBA has urged relevant authorities to ensure that constitutional processes are respected and that all individuals, regardless of the parties involved, are afforded their legal rights under the law.
