The presidential election of February, 25th, 2023 has come, and one can rightly say it has gone since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on the early hours of 1st March, 2023 declared Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the duly elected 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria polling majority votes than the other contenders.
Dissatisfied as the ‘Obidient’s’ and ‘Artikulated’, might be at the declared result, this is not the end of the race for change. Since the call for the suspension and/or cancellation of the electioneering process by the opposition party due to perceived irregularities of the process, many of the voters who came out on the 25th of February, to cast their votes, are now making a wrong decision thinking of not coming out on the March 11, 2023 gubernatorial election to cast their votes. This to me would defeat the purpose of us coming out en mass in the first place, for “change occurs as process, not as an event. Organizational change does not happen instantaneously because there was an announcement …”, we as a people have to see it through till the end.
Before we hurriedly make this decision of not coming out en mass to decide who our Governors and representatives of the State Houses of Assemblies are, let’s take a moment to imagine the stress we had to undergo to register for our PVC, collect the PVC, the whole day spent casting our votes and waiting for it to be collated on election day, all for us to throw our hands in the air because we lost the top spot, knowing full well that we are closer to the Governors of a State than to the President of a country.
Let us not forget that the clamor for change through our votes, produced some upset in the National Assemblies Elections of February, 25th, 2023 Elections; Darlington Nwokocha, Okey Ezea, Tony Nwoye, Victor Umeh, Neda Imasuen, all became Senators in the Labor Party because of the Obi Mantra, same with Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila and Sani Hanga of NNPP in Kano State (just to name a few), all winning incumbents at the polls to bring about the desired change we want, so why stop now?
No matter how flawed the presidential election of February, 25th, 2023 might have been, let us bear in mind that the voices of the people were still heard in Lagos, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States against incumbent Governors, and the same can be replicated in the gubernatorial election if we still come out en mass to vote on March 11th, 2023, and this time around no one leaves the Polling unit until results are uploaded to BVAS to be transmitted to the servers.
In a game of politics, you win some, and you loose some, as it stands, the leadership of both the PDP and LP have already rejected the declared results of INEC, so it is clear that they would seek recourse in the courts of law as the days unfolds, however, focus should now be beamed on winning the gubernatorial and state house of assembly seats in a bid to establish structure where none exists, or strengthen the already laid structures, as such we should all come out again on March 11th and replicate the results if not better of February, 25th.
Parties that need alliance in order to win the gubernatorial seat should begin to work together to achieve victory, it is clear from the presidential results declared that if there were to be an alliance between the PDP and LP they would definitely wrestle more states from the incumbents than if they went into the contest as a single unit. So to my mind, instead of the large number of voters going to sleep merely because they feel they were robbed of their rights on February, 25th, 2023, why not come out more strongly on March 11th, 2023 with better strategies to win the states election?
