The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has unexpectedly paid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members their old monthly allowance of N33,000 for September, despite recently approving an increase to N77,000. This decision has left many corps members feeling disappointed and frustrated.
Our correspondent spoke with several serving NYSC members over the phone, confirming their dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to implement the promised allowance increase. The Federal Government had officially approved raising the NYSC monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, which was set to take effect in July 2024 in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, had expressed gratitude to the government for the increased allowance, stating that it would provide financial relief and improve morale among corps members. However, the delay in implementing the new allowance has raised concerns among those who were expecting the increased payment for September.
Reports indicate that not all corps members have received their allowance yet, but those who have were credited with the old amount of N33,000. “They have not paid but the people around me who were paid got 33k (N33,000) instead of the N77,000 promised,” one corps member told our correspondent.
The announcement of the substantial increase in corps members’ monthly allowance was made last week by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu. The press statement confirmed that the allowance would be pegged at N77,000, up from the previous N33,000, effective from July 2024.
Many Nigerians have taken to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to express their anger over the government’s failure to implement the approved increment. The recent announcement by President Bola Tinubu approving a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 had raised hopes that NYSC members would receive an increased allowance of up to ₦77,000. However, the government’s inaction has resulted in widespread disappointment and outrage among Nigerian netizens.
A user on X, Chef Papichulo, commented, “So na 33k dem pay Corpers again this month!!! Well, y’all deserve the Nigeria you’re living in presently. Shebi you people are still watching BBN and doing Wizkid vs Davido fight.”
As the situation unfolds, corps members and the general public await an official response from the government regarding the delay in implementing the promised allowance increase.
