Inspector Augustine Odidika and late Chinedu George Nwaowu.

Odidika Augustine, a police officer detained for the alleged murder of Imo State-based lawyer Chinedu George Nwaowu, Esq., is reportedly receiving undue privileges while in custody at a police facility in Owerri, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation and the pursuit of justice.

According to credible sources, Augustine has unrestricted access to his mobile phone despite being held in detention. Reports indicate that he has been making phone calls, sending text messages, engaging in chats, and maintaining an active presence on social media—all from within the confines of the facility. On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Augustine allegedly contacted several friends and family members, Including sending a message to an individual he assumed had informed the Nwaowu family about the voice recording of their conversation, in which he vowed to finish Chinedu. This incident has heightened concerns about the level of freedom afforded to the murder suspect.

Further allegations suggest that Augustine is in regular communication with associates outside the detention center and is receiving sensitive updates from police officers linked to the case. These updates reportedly include details about the ongoing investigation and efforts to suppress the matter. Sources also claim that Augustine, alongside alleged co-conspirators Uzoma Odidika, Azubuike Ireozor and Amajuoyi Ireozor, is attempting to contact Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma in a bid to obstruct prosecution and evade trial.

The revelations have fueled suspicions of collusion within the police force to shield Augustine from accountability. Observers describe the preferential treatment as deeply troubling, particularly given the severity of the crime he is accused of committing. lawyers and human rights advocates have voiced alarm over the situation, pointing to a potential miscarriage of justice.

Compounding these concerns is the fact that, despite the police investigation concluding over a month ago, the case file has yet to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for arraignment. Analysts suggest that this delay may be a deliberate attempt to derail the legal process, further eroding public trust in the system.

Augustine was arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Chinedu George Nwaowu, a respected practicing lawyer in Imo State. The killing sent shockwaves through the legal community and the public, with calls for swift and transparent justice intensifying in the weeks that followed. However, the continued delay in prosecuting the suspect, coupled with reports of his privileges in custody, has sparked widespread outrage.

Members of the legal fraternity and concerned citizens have condemned the handling of the case, urging authorities to ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied. The situation has also reignited broader discussions about accountability within Nigeria’s security agencies and the need for systemic reforms to prevent such incidents.

At the time of filing this report, efforts to speak with Imo State Police were unsuccessful.
