Aliko Dangote’s 650,000 barrel-per-day oil refinery, the largest single-train refinery in the world, began production on Friday in a major milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector.

The refinery received its first crude oil shipments last year and has now started initial operations, focusing first on producing diesel and aviation fuel. Gasoline production is expected to follow.

The start of operations comes at a pivotal moment as the government of President Bola Tinubu implements economic reforms, discontinuing costly fuel subsidies and aiming to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports.

“Dangote Refinery can meet 100 percent of Nigeria’s requirement for all refined products,” the company said. The plant has capacity to produce enough gasoline, diesel, kerosene and jet fuel to meet domestic needs and export surpluses.

The 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery was first scheduled to open in 2021 but faced delays. Former President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the plant in 2023.

Analysts say the launch of the refinery, along with the upcoming restart of the Port Harcourt refinery, could transform Nigeria from a fuel importer to an exporter. With two major plants operational, Nigeria is positioned to shore up foreign reserves by reducing imports.

“Today marks a new era for Nigeria’s long-term economic growth,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization. “Dangote Refinery can drive job creation, build industries and help Nigeria realize its economic potential.”
