Speaking at the event, the Director-General, CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, said the meeting was convened following consumers’ complaints about poor electricity supply, non-supply of pre-paid meters after paying for them, and purchase of power equipment by electricity consumers. The CPC DG said since the mandate to protect electricity consumers fell within the purview of her agency, she would do all within her powers to resolve the crisis between the consumers and electricity distribution companies. Atoki said, “The CPC is organising a town hall meeting on electricity distribution based on the complaints we have received and electricity distribution is on top of the complaints. “Issue of paying for meters and the items not being provided was also a major complaint. The providers also have issues with illegal bypass of meters and illegal connection of meters, in addition to disruption of electrical installations. It’s a two-sided complaint. “As the agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting consumers, we felt it’s within our powers to step in, bring the two sides together and find a result.” She explained that the consumers’ complaints ranged from estimated billing, which did not reflect actual consumption of electricity, to being made to pay for facilities such as transformers and unlawful disconnection of power.]]>
