The Okeke brothers, 45 and 48 years old respectively, Southern City News gathered on Sunday were arraigned on Friday before Justice R. O. Onunkwo for killing their 39-year-old cousin over land dispute. It was learnt that a witness in the case, Ibuodinma Benjinus, had told the court that the two brothers had a protracted land dispute with their slain cousin. Benjinus said the dispute brought ill feelings among them and recalled that on Tuesday, May 11, 2017, the late Okwuchukwu Okeke ran to his house and told him that Chidiebere and Monday were after his life and that he was seeking refuge. Ibuodinma further told the court that a day after Okwuchukwu reported to him, Okwuchukwu got missing only to be found dead within their compound three days later. He said, “When the deceased’s decomposing body was found and police invited, the duo of Chidiebere Okeke and Monday Okeke took to their heels only to resurface two weeks later before they were arrested by the police.” The prosecuting counsel, Mr Ernest Okafor, in his submission, asked the court to give him time to liaise with the prime witness in the case to enable him to give “guided evidence” on the matter in the next adjourned date. The presiding Judge, Nwankwo, adjourned the matter till November 12, 13 and 28, 2018, for continuation of hearing, while the suspects were remanded in the prison custody. Speaking with journalists, the counsel for the accused persons, Oseloka Osigwe, expressed worry at how men of the Nigeria Police would point accusing fingers at individuals without doing thorough investigation on a matter before them. Osigwe promised that he would get to the root of the matter to ensure that justice was done.]]>
