Lawyers in Osun State have called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to urgently rehabilitate and modernise court buildings across the state, warning that deteriorating infrastructure is disrupting proceedings and undermining the administration of justice.

The lawyers, under the Nigerian Bar Association branches in Osogbo, Ikirun, Iwo, Ile-Ife and Ilesa, raised the concerns in a letter dated October 29, 2026, and received at the Governor’s Office on November 2.

The letter was signed by the chairmen of the five branches, Maruf Adediran of Osogbo, Abdulkareem Azeez of Ikirun, Emmanuel Gbadegesin of Iwo, Olawoye Festus of Ile-Ife and Adefunso Esan of Ilesa.

They called for the comprehensive rehabilitation, renovation and modernisation of court buildings and facilities across Osun State, saying several structures had deteriorated to a level that threatened the dignity of the judiciary and subjected judicial officers, lawyers, litigants and witnesses to avoidable hardship.

According to the lawyers, leaking roofs, damaged ceilings, inadequate seating arrangements and other infrastructural deficiencies have become recurring problems in several courts.

They said rainwater entering some courtrooms had forced proceedings to be interrupted or suspended, resulting in adjournments and delays in the determination of cases.

“It is unacceptable that court proceedings in a state governed by the rule of law should be dictated by the weather because the buildings in which justice is administered cannot adequately withstand rainfall,” the lawyers stated.

They said the deterioration was not limited to courtrooms, adding that the office of the Chief Judge and chambers of other judicial officers were also affected.

The lawyers expressed concern over the safety of court records, official documents, furniture and electronic equipment exposed to water leakage and other structural defects.

They urged the state government to carry out a comprehensive audit of facilities across the High Court, Customary Court of Appeal, Magistrates’ Courts and District Customary Courts.

According to them, the assessment should cover affected judicial facilities in Osogbo, Ikirun, Ilesa, Ile-Ife, Iwo, Ede and other parts of the state.

Beyond structural repairs, the NBA branches asked the government to provide modern equipment, including electronic case management systems, digital recording devices and computers, as well as adequate funding for maintenance and the training of judicial and registry personnel.

They also called for emergency attention to court buildings considered to pose safety risks.

The lawyers urged the government to involve the judiciary and the NBA in identifying infrastructural needs, determining project priorities and monitoring improvements, while respecting the independence of the judiciary.

“Our appeal is not merely about the physical appearance of court buildings; it concerns the ability of a critical institution of government to discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively and the ability of the people of Osun State to access justice without avoidable hardship,” the letter stated.

They maintained that judicial officers should not be expected to administer justice in buildings with leaking roofs, inadequate courtroom facilities or offices that expose personnel and court records to preventable risks.

The lawyers also stressed that equipping courts with modern facilities and technology would improve efficiency, strengthen justice delivery and enhance public confidence in the judicial system.

They added that the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers remained important to the effective administration of justice and urged the Adeleke administration to treat the rehabilitation of court infrastructure as a priority.
