A family court in Eilat, Israel, has approved a request by Sharon Eisenkot to use the sperm of her late son, 19-year-old Sgt. Maor Eisenkot, an IDF combat soldier killed in Gaza, to fulfill his wish of having children through surrogacy.
Maor Eisenkot, a member of the Golani Brigade’s 12th Battalion, was killed in December 2023 during Israel’s military operations in Gaza, part of the ongoing conflict following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks.
The court’s ruling marks the first such decision since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, and it sets a precedent in posthumous reproductive rights in Israel. The court based its decision on compelling testimony from a close childhood friend of Maor’s, who revealed that the young soldier had clearly stated his desire to have children—even if through surrogacy with a woman he did not know—and consented to the use of his sperm should anything happen to him.
Sharon Eisenkot, who is a half-sister to former Israeli war cabinet minister and ex-IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, had petitioned the court based on this testimony and in a bid to preserve her son’s legacy.
“Every Friday when I set the table and have to place Maor’s photo on it—it burns my soul,” she said in an emotional interview with Channel 12. “His absence tears at my soul—everywhere, at all hours of the day.”
The grieving mother described how she sprays Maor’s cologne around the house just to feel close to him again.
Maor’s death came just weeks after that of his cousin, Staff Sergeant (res.) Gal Eisenkot, the son of Gadi Eisenkot, and followed the loss of another relative, Captain Yogev Pazy, killed in Gaza in November 2024.
Described as a serious and responsible young man, Maor played for the youth soccer team in Eilat, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike.
