The Federal Government has announced urgent plans to evacuate Nigerian citizens currently stranded in Israel and Iran, as hostilities between the two countries escalate into the sixth day of conflict.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that evacuation arrangements are nearing completion and are expected to commence shortly.

“All affected Nigerian citizens are strongly advised to adhere to necessary security protocols and to contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for registration and further instructions,” the ministry stated.

The government reiterated Nigeria’s call for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran, urging both sides to prioritize diplomacy and the protection of civilian lives.

Commending the Nigerian Missions in Tel Aviv and Tehran, the Federal Government praised their “commitment and tireless efforts” in reaching out to citizens and coordinating safety protocols under tense conditions.

“We wish to assure the general public that the Federal Government of Nigeria remains committed to the safety and welfare of all its citizens, both at home and abroad,” the statement read, adding that efforts are underway in close coordination with international partners and local authorities to ensure a secure and timely evacuation process.

Tensions flared on Friday after Israel carried out military strikes on Iranian territory, which it described as a pre-emptive move to stop Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme. In response, Iran suspended ongoing nuclear talks with the United States, although it later hinted at a potential return to negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump, however, maintained a hardline position, calling for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and refusing to soften Washington’s stance.

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, expressed deep concern over the escalation and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. In a strongly worded statement, he appealed to the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to intensify peace efforts and facilitate dialogue.

Meanwhile, experts have warned that the ongoing conflict may have broader implications for Nigeria, particularly in the energy sector.
