There was confusion in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, read a letter announcing the defection of the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

The announcement came after Chinda had already emerged as the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection letter read by the Speaker during plenary was, however, dated April 23, 2026, raising questions over the timing of the formal announcement and Chinda’s continued occupation of the Minority Leader position until Tuesday.

Following the announcement of his defection, Chinda resigned as Minority Leader of the House.

His resignation means the opposition caucus in the House will now be required to elect a new Minority Leader to replace him.

Chinda, who represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State, was elected to the House on the platform of the PDP and became one of the most prominent opposition figures in the Green Chamber.

However, his movement to the APC has continued to generate political and legal controversy, especially after his emergence as the ruling party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State.

The development also comes amid a broader wave of political realignments in the National Assembly and across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chinda is already facing a lawsuit challenging his defection from the PDP to the APC, with claims that the move did not follow due process.

The controversy is expected to raise further questions about the legal and political consequences of his defection, particularly in relation to his former position as Minority Leader and his new status as APC governorship candidate in Rivers State.

With his resignation, the House of Representatives is expected to commence the process of choosing a new Minority Leader in line with its internal procedures and opposition caucus arrangements.
