Daily Law Tips (Tip 510) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

CONDITIONS FOR DISCONNECTION OF ELECTRICITY SUPPLY IN ANY PART OF NIGERIA.

Electricity supply in Nigeria is now managed by about 11 electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. Before now, electricity supply could easily be stopped/disconnected (popularly known as, “cut”) by then electricity monopoly; NEPA or PHCN. The era of unguided disconnection is now over, all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) in Nigeria must follow the laid down conditions and procedures for disconnection of electricity even when customer is owing them.

Electricity Distribution Companies includes; Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC),
Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC), Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDC), Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc (EEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Plc (IBEDC), Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JEDC), Kaduna Electricity Distribution Plc (KNEDC), Kano Electricity Distribution Plc (KEDC), Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc (PHEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company Plc (YEDC).

No electricity distribution company in Nigeria can disconnect any customer from electricity supply even when customer is owing/indebted to the company, unless the following conditions are met by the company;

1. A correct bill with a clear payment date is served on customer
2. Customer is given at least 10 working days to pay from the date of receipt of bill.
3. Customer received a written warning that electricity supply will be disconnected if payment is not made.
4. There is at least 3 months between the payment date and the date of disconnection.

My authority is Regulation 5 of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Connection and Disconnection Procedures For Electricity Services, 2007.
