Russia has said it is closely monitoring developments following reports of possible United States military action in Nigeria, triggered by recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, stated this on Friday while responding to a question from Anadolu Agency during a press briefing in Moscow.

Zakharova urged Washington to act responsibly and in accordance with international law in handling global security issues.

“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” she said.

Trump had, on November 1, announced that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare options for potential military measures against terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing the need to protect Christian communities.

Responding to another question regarding Kazakhstan’s decision to join the Abraham Accords, Zakharova said Moscow had no immediate comment on the development.

Kazakhstan confirmed its participation in the accords on Friday, a day after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the move during a phone conversation held in the presence of Trump.

Meanwhile, Zakharova expressed concern over increasing reports of Israeli violations of the ceasefire along the Lebanese border.

She noted that Moscow continues to engage with both Israeli and Lebanese authorities, stressing the importance of avoiding actions that could reignite hostilities.

“We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict,” she said.

Zakharova reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to maintain peace and stability in Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
