The Labour Party has distanced itself from lawsuits filed by its former National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, seeking access to the academic and national service records of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The party clarified that Arabambi was no longer its member and did not institute the actions on its behalf.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said Arabambi was among 25 members suspended by its National Executive Council on March 18, 2026, over alleged anti-party activities.
According to Asogwa, the decision was subsequently ratified by the party’s National Convention on April 28, 2026, after which Arabambi and the other affected individuals ceased to be members of the party.
The clarification followed media reports describing Arabambi as a Labour Party chieftain in connection with separate suits he reportedly filed against the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps.
The suits, instituted under the Freedom of Information Act, seek orders compelling the institutions to release records relating to certificates and other credentials allegedly issued to Obi.
“Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party and could not have instituted any action in court as a member of the party,” the statement said.
The party maintained that no organ had reviewed or reversed the decisions suspending and subsequently removing Arabambi and the other affected members.
It warned that any representation by Arabambi that he was acting as a Labour Party chieftain or representative was unauthorised and could, prima facie, amount to impersonation.
Asogwa disclosed that the party’s lawyers were reviewing the development to determine the appropriate legal steps, including the possibility of petitioning law-enforcement agencies.
The Labour Party, however, declined to comment on the merits of Arabambi’s cases, noting that Obi was no longer its member.
It stressed that its statement was issued solely to clarify Arabambi’s relationship with the party and had no bearing on the validity or otherwise of the claims contained in the pending suits.
