*Warns Against Commenting on Court Cases in Media, Vows Decisive Action Against Offenders

The newly confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has issued a stern warning to those who habitually comment on issues before the court in the media. During her appearance before the Senate for screening and confirmation on Wednesday, Kekere-Ekun assured that such individuals would be dealt with decisively.

In response to a question from the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the CJN emphasized that social media would not influence court decisions. She stated, “Social media cannot influence, it will not influence court decisions, it is true that there is a lot going on in social media.”

When pressed further by the President of the Senate on the attitudes of lawyers commenting on issues before the court, Kekere-Ekun firmly declared, “I want to assure you, we will ensure that those who are in the habit of commenting on issues before the court in media will not have where to hide, they will be dealt with decisively.”

During the session, Justice Kekere-Ekun also pledged to leverage technology to ensure quick dispensation of justice in the country. She emphasized her commitment to maintaining the independence of the judiciary from external influence.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s strong stance on these matters sends a clear message that the judiciary will not tolerate any attempts to sway public opinion or influence court proceedings through media commentary. Her dedication to upholding the rule of law, ensuring fair and unbiased court proceedings, and modernizing the justice system has been well-received by many who believe that the judiciary should operate independently and efficiently.

As Kekere-Ekun assumes her role as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, she makes history as the country’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice and the second female to hold the position. Her appointment is seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s legal system, and her leadership is expected to bring about positive changes in the administration of justice.
