Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reiterated that Nigerian citizenship is a privilege that must be earned, stressing the importance of rigorous scrutiny of all applicants. He made the remarks in Abuja during a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship (ACNC).

Tunji-Ojo tasked committee members with diligently vetting applications, ensuring that only individuals of proven integrity and good character are considered worthy of citizenship. “Anyone who holds the citizenship of our great country must be a person of strong character and impeccable integrity, reflecting the true values of Nigeria,” he said.

The minister also warned against attempts to obtain Nigerian citizenship or naturalisation through illegal means, emphasising that legal migration must be respected.

Reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Tunji-Ojo said the committee’s work directly supports the government’s vision for national integrity, security, and prosperity. He added that citizenship should not be granted to individuals who pose potential security risks.

“Nigeria remains the greatest asset to its citizens,” he noted, calling on all stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s integrity and greatness.

Members of the ACNC include the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the Directors of Citizenship and Business and Legal Services of the Ministry of Interior.
