The historic town of Lassa in Borno State has taken a major step towards preserving its identity and cultural heritage with the official launch of the book, A History of Lassa, authored by Mr. Abdulkadir Gambo Gadzama.

The book was publicly presented in Abuja on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at an event attended by dignitaries, scholars, traditional rulers and members of the Margi community.
The event was chaired by Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, SAN, who described the publication as a significant contribution to cultural preservation and historical justice for the people of Lassa and the Margi nation.
In his remarks, Chief Gadzama said the book represents more than a historical record, describing it as an “act of justice” for a people whose story deserves to be told in their own voice.
Quoting Marcus Garvey, he said, “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
Chief Gadzama noted that for many years, Lassa had been popularly associated with the deadly Lassa fever virus discovered in 1969, while the deeper history, civilisation, customs and social organisation of the people had received less attention.
He said A History of Lassa corrects that imbalance by presenting an authentic account of the town’s heritage, identity and contribution to the broader Nigerian story.
According to him, the work will serve as an important reference for scholars, students, policymakers and future generations seeking to understand the history and culture of the Margi people.
“Many years from now, scholars, students, policymakers, and descendants will turn the pages of this book,” he said.

“They will remember the man who chose not to allow the story of his people disappear.”
Chief Gadzama commended the author, Mr. Abdulkadir Gambo Gadzama, for undertaking the demanding task of documenting the history of Lassa, saying the work would preserve memory, strengthen identity and inspire pride among the people.
The book launch also served as a platform for the reawakening of Margi consciousness and cultural unity.
As part of the event, Chief Gadzama introduced the newly registered Margi Without Borders Association, a global initiative aimed at uniting Margi people across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
He encouraged members of the Margi community worldwide to register and participate actively in the association, noting that the initiative would help strengthen cultural bonds, identity and collective development.
Speakers at the event emphasised the importance of documenting local histories, especially in a country as culturally diverse as Nigeria.
They noted that community histories such as that of Lassa are essential building blocks in understanding the nation’s broader past and preserving the memory of its peoples.
Chief Gadzama said the preservation of Lassa’s history should be seen as part of a larger national duty to protect cultural heritage and transmit knowledge across generations.
“When we preserve the history of Lassa, we enrich the history of Nigeria,” he said.
The event ended with renewed calls for the preservation of culture, documentation of memory, promotion of identity and celebration of the enduring spirit of the people of Lassa.
