The wife of Mr. Vijah Eldred Opuama, Mrs. Cherry Vijay, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to free her husband after he was arrested by men of the Nigeria police force in Abuja.

In a video sighted by TheNigerialawyer (TNL), Mrs. Cherry Vijah was seen full of emotions as she calls on relevant authorities and bodies to prevail on the IGP to release her husband who is yet to be charged to court.

According to her, Vijah Opuama, who was the governorship candidate of the Liberation Movement was arrested on the 15th day of August, 2020, by the IGP Monitoring Unit for allegedly recording a phone call he received from a caller, who identified himself as one Benson Agadaga, the Chief of Staff to the Bayelsa State government. She claimed that he was handcuffed, and in the process, an officer rushed at her and kicked her on the stomach.

“Vijah Opuama was already in handcuffs, yet the police officer rushed at me and kicked me on the stomach.

“This is just barely a week after I had a miscarriage. And I was going through pains and on heavy medications, and treatments,” she added.

She stressed that her husband has not committed any offence, as it is not a crime for him to file an election petition matter against the Governor of Bayelsa State. She, thus, calls on the President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Muhammad Tanko, Civil liberty organizations, amongst others, to intervene to see to the release of her husband.

TNL recalls that Mr. Vijah Opuama was arrested at the election petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on the 15th of August, 2020 when the Tribunal was about delivering the judgement in the case between Vijah Opuama and PDP & 3 Ors. Vijah Opuama had asked the Tribunal to disqualify Gov. Douye Diri election as the Governor of Bayelsa State, on the ground that his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhdrujakpo, presented a forged certificate to INEC.

It is about two weeks the petitioner has been arrested and he is yet to be charge to court.
