The Kano State Government has prohibited patent medicine stores, commonly known as chemists, from administering intravenous fluids or conducting blood transfusions across the state.

The directive was announced on Tuesday by the Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency, which warned that any patent medicine store or unauthorised facility found violating the ban would be closed immediately and subjected to further sanctions.

PHIMA said patent medicine stores were legally classified as non-clinical retail outlets and were not authorised to perform invasive medical procedures, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding a patient’s condition.

The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Fauziyya Habib Mahmoud, said in a statement that the directive was introduced to protect residents from unsafe medical practices capable of causing serious complications or death.

“Patent Medicine Stores are legally non-clinical retail outlets and are strictly not authorised to perform invasive medical procedures, administer IV drips, or conduct blood transfusions under any circumstances,” the statement read.

The agency stressed that the prohibition was absolute and applied regardless of whether an operator considered a patient’s condition an emergency.

Reaffirming the government’s position, PHIMA’s Acting Executive Secretary, Hajiya Khadijah Hussein Sa’id, said the enforcement formed part of the government’s responsibility to safeguard the health and lives of Kano residents.

“This decisive action aligns directly with the vision of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, which prioritises a ‘Kano First’ approach across all sectors and places the ultimate priority on protecting the health and lives of our citizens,” Sa’id said.

She warned that any patent medicine store or other unauthorised facility caught administering intravenous fluids or carrying out blood transfusions would face immediate closure and other appropriate regulatory sanctions.

PHIMA urged residents to report patent medicine stores and unauthorised facilities engaging in the prohibited procedures to the agency’s office at Magaji Rumfa in Kano.

The agency encouraged members of the public to accompany their reports with supporting evidence, including photographs, receipts or other documents showing that the prohibited services were offered or provided.
