Tensions escalated yesterday in Awada, Obosi, following a violent confrontation between members of the Awada Central Landlords Association Vigilante and individuals allegedly linked to the government-established Anti-Touting Squad.

The incident, which occurred yesterday, involved a group of men allegedly associated with the government-established Anti-Touting Squad, who reportedly destroyed property, looted offices, and abducted several individuals, including the association’s chief clerk.

According to reports, the crisis began when the vigilante commander of the Awada Central Landlords Association received a distress call about the abduction of two individuals by unidentified men at Nwaziki Avenue, Awada.

The commander dispatched two vigilante personnel to the scene, where they encountered a group of eight men, some wearing the uniform of the Anti-Touting Squad and others in plain clothes. When the vigilantes questioned the identity of the plain-clothed individuals, they were met with resistance and subsequently bundled into a bus by the squad.

Upon learning of the situation, the vigilante commander mobilized additional personnel to rescue his men. They intercepted the Anti-Touting Squad, retrieved the keys to their bus, and directed them to report to their chief commander. However, instead of complying, the squad allegedly regrouped and launched a retaliatory attack on the Landlords Association Secretariat.

The attackers arrived in a convoy of eight buses, four Sienna cars, and several motorcycles, with an estimated 100 individuals. They unleashed chaos, destroying glass windows, vandalizing property, and looting offices. Among the items damaged or stolen were the association’s Hilux van, Mitsubishi bus, motorcycles, and vital documents. The health center, lab, and doctor’s office within the Secretariat, which are run by the state government, were also reportedly vandalized.

The assailants forcibly entered the offices of the chief clerk and financial secretary, making off with an undisclosed amount of money. They also ransacked the secretary general’s office, taking away important documents. Before leaving, they abducted the association’s chief clerk, Miss Chinwendu, two security personnel, and confiscated four guns, a motorcycle, three phones, ten torches, two motor batteries, and other items.

The Awada Central Landlords Association has since lodged a formal complaint at the Awada Police Station. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) visited the scene to assess the damage and initiate an investigation.

In a joint statement, the leadership of the Awada Central Landlords Association, including President General Chief Sir Oyeduba Patrick, Secretary General Comrade Ogbachalu Hilary, and First Vice President Chief Nwabueze Okechukwu, condemned the attack and called for justice. They expressed hope that the law would take its full course and that the perpetrators would be held accountable for their actions.

Efforts to reach Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Ikenga Tochukwu Anthony for comments were unsuccessful, as multiple calls to his line rang unanswered. The community awaits further action from law enforcement, hoping that justice will be served.
