Maikyau SAN, in his message on Friday, admonished the new Wigs to uphold the ethics of the profession and to make integrity their hallmark.
He said: “Dear New Wigs, Congratulations on your achievement of what is clearly a commendable feat- being called to the Bar.
“You should be proud of this achievement and relish these moments, as they are memorable.
“Important as this milestone is, it is the beginning of a new chapter in your life. You must be aware of some of the socio-economic challenges that bedevil our Country. Our profession is not exempted from these socio-economic challenges. Our current situation leaves much to be desired.
“However, challenges usually throw up opportunities – here comes the silver lining: You are young, smart, energetic, and full of ideas. Unlike most of us who came before you, the entire globe is your stage.
“If you make up your mind to broaden your horizon, sharpen your skills, and apply yourselves to the broad spectrum of emerging opportunities, you will find that you can widen the shrinking practice space. You must be innovative and proactive.
“Most importantly, you must make integrity your primary policy.
“Your reputation is everything – guard it with all that you have. My Principal-in-Chambers (of blessed memory) told me as a young wig like you, that a Lawyer only needs 80% Honesty and 20% Law to excel.
“I have found this prescription to be true, so I prescribe the same to you. Use it and you will find it to be true.
“Lastly, I say to you, that the leadership of the Bar, as well as some of us who are privileged to call ourselves your Seniors today, will do all that it takes to safeguard this Noble Profession for you, until it is your time to do same for the next generation of Lawyers coming after you, as it should be.
“Congratulations once again, and I look forward to interacting with as many of you as I get privileged to encounter in the very many capacities abound.
“Welcome to the Bar and I wish you luck.
“God Bless the NBA! God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!”
