CATEGORY OF PERSONS ELIGIBLE TO ADOPT A CHILD IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, persons who may apply to adopt children are:

(a) a married couple, where each of them has attained the age of 25 years and there is an order authorising them to adopt jointly;

(b) a married person if he has obtained consent of his spouse;

(c) a single person, if he has attained the age of 35 years, and the child to be adopted is of the same sex as the person adopting; etcetera

In every case, the adopter or adopters must be found suitable to adopt the child in question.

See Section 129 of the Child Right Act.
