*Approves Six Major Road Projects

President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of six major road projects across Nigeria, alongside the demolition and redesign of the Carter Bridge in Lagos, the Minister of Works, Dav Umahi, disclosed on Wednesday.

The projects include the completion of the 71-kilometre remaining section of the Suleja–Minna dual carriageway, with one carriageway awarded to China Geo-Engineering Corporation at a cost of ₦91 billion, while the second carriageway has received Bureau of Public Procurement clearance.

The Carter Bridge, linking Lagos Island to the mainland, has been deemed irreparable after technical evaluations and stakeholder consultations. FEC approved N5.6 billion for advanced engineering consultants to carry out detailed design and cost assessment ahead of the bridge’s reconstruction.

Other road projects approved for construction or upgrading include:

  • Kano–Kongolam Road: The 132-kilometre route connecting Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states will be reconstructed as a three-lane concrete carriageway with solar-powered streetlights and CCTV installations, estimated at ₦334 billion.
  • Abuja–Lokoja Road: An 86-kilometre section, previously handled by underperforming contractors, will be reconstructed in reinforced concrete, involving five contractors including Julius Berger, at ₦146 billion.
  • Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Road: A 103-kilometre dual carriageway valued at ₦427 billion, reviewed and re-awarded after minimal progress under the previous administration.
  • Keffi–Nasarawa–Abaji Road (Phase Two): Covering 129.3 kilometres at a cost of ₦203 billion, aimed at improving connectivity between Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Umahi emphasized that these approvals form part of broader efforts to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country. The federal government plans to commission at least four major road projects in each of the six geopolitical zones by May 15.

“The projects are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure initiatives aimed at boosting connectivity and fostering development across Nigeria,” he said.
