A statement by the Head, Public Affairs of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ofoyeju Mitchell, on Saturday, explained that 23-year-old physically challenged, Abbas Ahmed, was arrested by the police on February 5, 2014 along the Agege Motor Road, Lagos. Mitchell said he was caught while dealing in cannabis, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, contrary to and punishable under Section 11 (c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2001. The guard, Adebowale Michael, aged 22, on the other hand, was arrested with four pinches of cocaine weighing 0.7 grammes at Oniru Estate in the Lekki-Ajah area of Lagos by youths who handed him over to the police in February 2017. He was later transferred to the NDLEA which charged with unlawful dealing in cocaine contrary to and punishable under the NDLEA Act. The convicts had pleaded for mercy and urged the court to consider their young age and the fact that they are first offenders. But Justice Aikawa in his ruling noted that drug trafficking particularly cocaine trafficking was an international crime that had smeared the reputation of the country and must be seriously dealt with. He therefore sentenced both convicts to five years imprisonment each.]]>
