A social-media dispute between Big Brother Naija Season 6 winner Hazel Oyeze Onou, popularly known as Whitemoney, and actor Uche Maduagwu has escalated from allegations of defamation into a viral public confrontation in which Whitemoney and a man described online as his bodyguard were accused of physically assaulting Maduagwu.

The controversy began on September 8, 2026, when Maduagwu posted a video in which he referred to Whitemoney as an “osu,” a historically stigmatised caste designation in parts of Igboland. He also claimed to have information about Whitemoney’s background and reportedly said the reality star’s sister had confirmed the allegation. Whitemoney has denied the claims.
Maduagwu also reportedly alleged that a film associated with producer Joseph Okechukwu was based on Whitemoney’s personal story and that the reality star had paid for elements of his story to be incorporated into the production.
Whitemoney responded in a separate video, strongly rejecting the allegations and accusing Maduagwu of using his name to generate online attention. He said he had known Maduagwu from their days in Surulere and questioned his credibility.
The former BBNaija winner subsequently threatened legal action over what he described as defamatory statements.
“Before then, you are going to hear from my lawyers for this defamatory speech made in the name of chasing clout,” Whitemoney said.
However, days after the legal threat, videos began circulating on social media purportedly showing Whitemoney confronting Maduagwu in public.
Posts accompanying the footage alleged that Whitemoney arrived with a man described as his bodyguard and that Maduagwu was assaulted during the confrontation. Maduagwu also described the incident as an “assault” and questioned why bodyguards had allegedly been brought to the encounter.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation have not been independently established. The material reviewed does not contain confirmation of a police complaint or arrest, a medical report detailing any injuries, a court filing by either party, or a detailed public explanation from Whitemoney concerning what occurred.
There is also no independent confirmation that the circulating footage was spontaneous rather than staged or edited.
That uncertainty has attracted attention because Maduagwu has previously been involved in a viral confrontation later acknowledged to have been staged. In 2021, actor Jim Iyke was filmed confronting Maduagwu after comments about his wealth, but Iyke later disclosed that the incident was orchestrated as publicity for the movie Bad Comments.
That earlier incident does not establish that the present confrontation with Whitemoney was staged, but it has contributed to public scepticism surrounding the viral footage.
The dispute now presents two potentially separate legal issues.
Maduagwu’s statements describing Whitemoney as “osu” and making allegations about his background could potentially form the basis of a defamation complaint if Whitemoney establishes that the statements were false, referred to him, were published to third parties and were capable of lowering his reputation in the estimation of others.
At the same time, if evidence eventually establishes that Whitemoney or another person unlawfully assaulted Maduagwu, that could raise separate criminal and civil liability. A potentially defamatory publication does not legally justify physical retaliation or self-help violence.
Under the Criminal Code framework generally applicable in southern Nigeria, unlawful assault may constitute a misdemeanour punishable by up to one year imprisonment where no more serious punishment applies. Where an assault causes physical harm, more serious provisions may become applicable depending on the facts, the injuries and the law governing the location of the incident.
Maduagwu could also, depending on the evidence, pursue a civil claim for assault and battery, with possible claims for general damages, special damages where measurable losses are proved, aggravated damages in appropriate circumstances and restraining relief against further harassment.
For now, however, both sides of the controversy remain allegations requiring proof.
The key evidence would include the full unedited video, independent recordings or CCTV, eyewitness accounts, any medical report, a police complaint, the original social-media posts and any messages showing whether the encounter was planned.
Accordingly, the accurate position remains that Whitemoney and a man described as his bodyguard have been accused in viral social-media posts of assaulting Maduagwu, while Maduagwu’s “osu” allegation against Whitemoney remains a claim that Whitemoney has expressly denied. No publicly verified police finding or court decision has established liability on either side.
