Nearly three decades after his infamous court testimony weakened the prosecution’s murder case against O.J. Simpson, former Los Angeles police detective and media personality Mark Fuhrman likely has no desire to return to the law enforcement trade in California., according to sfchronicle report.

Now, even if he wants to, he cannot — officially.

California’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training began moving to “decertify” officers last year under a new reform law meant to rebuild the public’s trust with police. Records show Fuhrman was declared ineligible, effective May 14, under Government Code section 1029, which prohibits people from acting as peace officers for a number of reasons, including if they have been convicted of a felony.

Fuhrman, who is 72, pleaded no contest in 1996 to a felony count of perjury for lying at Simpson’s trial about whether he used a racial slur. Simpson’s lawyers played a tape in which Fuhrman used the slur, contradicting his earlier testimony that he had not done so in the previous 10 years. Fuhrman was the only person convicted in any criminal case stemming from the June 1994 knife slayings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Fuhrman became the centerpiece of the defense’s ultimately successful argument that racist Los Angeles police officers had sought to frame O.J. Simpson for a crime he did not commit. The former football star’s lawyers argued that Fuhrman planted a bloody glove at the defendant’s home, an assertion that was never proved.

It’s not clear if Simpson’s death in April triggered the state’s review of Fuhrman.

After Fuhrman retired from the Los Angeles force in August 1995, he became a television and radio personality and wrote true crime books, including “Murder in Brentwood” about the Simpson case. He has apologized in interviews for his racist language, while saying he is not a racist and denying that he planted evidence. He has in recent years been an on-air “forensic and crime scene expert” for Fox News.

California’s police decertification law, SB2, passed in 2021 in the wake of nationwide protests over the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd. Before it passed, California was one of just four states without a process to decertify police officers. Dozens of officers who worked in the state have been barred from the profession so far, and the number may grow into the thousands in the years ahead.
