The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has extended the deadline for companies to file their annual returns without penalties to April 1, 2024.

The regulatory agency said this is due to glitches with the Company Registration Portal (CRP) and appeals received from micro, small and medium enterprises.

In a public notice signed by its management, CAC had earlier said that from January 1, 2024, it would start imposing the full penalties prescribed by law on companies that fail to submit annual returns.

But it has now shifted the date to April 1, urging all registered entities to utilize the extension to update their filings.

The commission however clarified that the extension does not affect striking-off proceedings commenced prior to November 2, 2023.

It also warned that defaulting directors and officers of struck-off companies will now be held liable for recovery of any outstanding penalties.

Entities affected by the filing requirement include companies, LLPs, limited partnerships, business names and trustees.
