*Condemns Attack on NBA President by Adegboyega Awomolo SAN

The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in its meeting held today, Thursday, 16th of December, 2021 in Abeokuta has resolved that all members of the Bar who represent the Bar in Agencies and Committees must give periodic reports to the National Executive on their activities and engagements within periods in review.

The NBA-NEC is currently meeting at Abeokuta the State Capital of Ogun State and is expected to address key issues relating to the Bar and affecting the nation in general, and come up with resolutions afterwards.

According to insinuations, this resolution is coming at the heels of a recent impasse between the Bar leadership and the Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission at the last NBA Annual General Meeting.

Recall TheNigeriaLawyer reported the controversy which resulted from the refusal of the CAC RG to present the report of activities before the AGM in line with regular and time-honoured practice.

The refusal by the Registrar General sparked strong displeasure from lawyers across the country who described the act as a display of insolence against the Nigerian Bar Association and urged the Bar’s leadership to take firm action against such to avoid a repeat.

The NBA-NEC also agreed that there will be no more payments of BPF in banks by filling tellers, hence BPF will only be paid online. Leaders of Branches need to take note and sensitize members

In a related development, the NBA-NEC at the meeting also condemned the attack by a prominent and respected member of the Inner Bar, Adegboyega Awomolo SAN against the NBA President and passed a vote of confidence on him and his Executives.

In a recent notice to the Body of Senior Advocates (BOSAN), Awomolo described comments made by the Bar President at the swearing-in of new senior advocates as “very uncouched (sic) and sarcastic… unkind and uncharitable… smarked (sic) of immaturity and insulting”.

According to Awomolo, the NBA President’s comment which insinuated the Body of Senior Advocates intented to compromise the unity and integrity of the NBA through the Legal Practitioner’s Bill currently before the National Assembly. Allegations which he refuted and described as inappropriate.

However, the National Executive Council of the NBA has condemned the attack by the Senior Advocate, and also reaffirmed their unflinching confidence in the Olumide Akpata leadership.
