National Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday expressed doubts over the ability of the police to thoroughly investigate the Tuesday’s attack on his home and the ADC Secretariat in Edo with a view to apprehending the suspected thugs who carried out the attacks.

Odigie-Oyegun, who doubles as the first Executive Governor of Edo, expressed the doubts while fielding questions from journalists in his Benin residence after hosting the Southt-Soutj Zonal Leadership Committee meeting of the ADC.

The octogenarian politician added that he was not sure if any anyone had been arrested in connection with the twin attack, just as he expressed pessimism if anyone would ever be arrested on the account of the incident.

“I am not sure if an arrest has been made. I am also not sure if an arrest will be made considering the nature of the event.

“Imagine people bearing arms in broad daylight and were seen and no one has been arrested up till now.

“It was the security agencies that gave us a hint of the attack that saved us. We had to quickly bring the programme to an end. We barely got to my house and we had that the secretariat had been attacked by thugs bearing arms.

“If we were still there when they attacked the secretariat, we won’t be saying what we are saying now.” Chief Odigie-Oyegun bemoaned.

The incident notwithstanding, the ADC chieftain expressed the readiness of the party for the January general election, but urged the government in power to allow peace to reign and eschew violence in the run up to the election.

Odigie-Oyegun readsured that the ADC would do everything possible to position the party as the party of choice for Nigerians, noting that it was the first time in the political trajectory of Nigeria that the masses would come together to form a political party.

This was just as he stressed that neither the governors nor any elected political office holder would determine the choices the people would make during the election as the masses had come of age to determine their destiny and political choices.

“With what is happening in our nation, an emergency rescue is needed and as a party we will ensure that Nigerians remain the crux of governance.” He assured.

Odigie-Oyegun therefore appealed to the leaders and party members in the zone to work in unity, learn from each other’s experience so that the zone could be worthy of emulation.

The ADC National Leader also hinted that the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, had informed the South-South zonal leadership that he would be contesting the party’s presidential ticket.
