…Says Warm Relations Will Not Silence Me

United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he would publicly challenge United States President Donald Trump whenever doing so becomes necessary to defend Britain’s national interests.
Burnham, who became prime minister on July 20, 2026, made the declaration during his first major broadcast interview since assuming office, stressing that maintaining cordial relations with Washington would not prevent him from expressing disagreement with the American president.
Although he described his first conversation with Trump as warm, the British leader said every head of government has a responsibility to place the interests of their own country above personal relationships with foreign leaders.
“If it’s right for the UK, I’ll be willing to call him out,” Burnham said, adding that defending Britain’s national interest was essential to carrying out the responsibilities of his office properly.
Burnham acknowledged that international relations were rapidly changing and said he could not promise always to agree with Trump or refrain from publicly presenting a position different from that of the United States.
According to him, there may be occasions when Britain’s interests require its government to express a different opinion or pursue a separate policy from Washington.
“I can’t at any point say that I won’t take a different opinion from him, that I will need to voice a different idea that is right for Britain,” the prime minister said.
Burnham added that he would not hesitate to state what he considered right, even where his position conflicted with that of the American president.
His remarks come amid differences between London and Washington over the continuing military confrontation with Iran.
Burnham said he had expressed concern about Trump’s decision to begin military action against Iran and maintained that he would continue speaking openly about issues affecting Britain’s security and foreign-policy interests.
The British government has maintained that it does not support offensive military operations against Iran, although it continues to regard its defence and security relationship with the United States as important.
Britain’s Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, similarly said the UK had not supported offensive action against Iran and would not do so, while stressing that London and Washington could still cooperate on several other defence and security matters.
Burnham’s remarks came shortly after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that Britain and any other country supporting the United States in the conflict could be treated as legitimate targets.
The Iranian military organisation alleged that American bombers had recently used British airfields and warned that any country assisting Washington in the war risked becoming a target of Iranian attacks.
The British government has said it is prepared to defend the country and its military interests against any attack, while attempting to avoid direct involvement in offensive operations against Iran.
Burnham’s comments signal that his administration intends to preserve the longstanding defence partnership between Britain and the United States while retaining the freedom to publicly oppose decisions considered inconsistent with the UK’s national interest.
