Two legal scholars from Abia State University have released what is being described as a groundbreaking contribution to Nigerian legal literature — a tort law textbook that prioritises practical application over abstract theory.

The book, titled The Law of Torts in Nigeria: A Functional Approach, authored by Professor Hagler Sunny Okorie Ph.D and Ikeocha, Nathaniel Ngozi Esq, offers law students, practitioners, and academics a comprehensive guide to understanding and applying tort law in Nigerian courts.

Unlike conventional tort law textbooks that focus primarily on listing rules and principles, the new publication adopts what the authors describe as “a functional approach” — demonstrating how tort law operates in real legal practice.

The book combines legal rules, Nigerian case law, and practical examples to help readers understand and apply tort law efficiently in both academic and courtroom settings.

“This approach helps you see tort law not just as theory, but as a tool for solving everyday legal problems,” the authors stated in the book’s introduction.

The publication covers the definition of tort as a civil wrong, demonstrates fundamental principles and major types of torts, and provides detailed treatment of defences and remedies under the Nigerian legal context.

The structure, style, content, and format of presentation have been designed to serve the needs of legal practitioners, law students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and legal scholars engaged in research.
