RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian supreme court justice is giving President Jair Bolsonaro five days to respond to accusations that his new gun decree constitutes an abuse of power.
The May 7 decree loosens the country’s strict gun laws by widely expanding Brazilians’ ability to sell, access and carry firearms.
The Sustainability Network party has filed a petition with the Supreme Federal Tribunal, saying the decree constitutes an “abuse of regulatory power by the executive” and should have been passed by Congress.
Justice Rosa Weber said Friday that she needed more information before she could rule on the decree’s legality.
Critics say wider access to guns will only increase violence in a country that already has the world’s highest number of annual homicides.
