The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the upgrade of the Nigeria Police Force Legal Section to a full-fledged Directorate of Legal Services in a move aimed at boosting institutional capacity and operational efficiency.

The announcement, made on Tuesday by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the new Directorate will be the apex legal organ of the Force, responsible for coordinating legal services, conducting legal training, reviewing policies, and engaging with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.

Adejobi noted that the restructuring will give the Force’s legal operations a clear institutional identity, strengthen cohesion, and secure recognition domestically and internationally.

As part of the reform, Assistant Inspector-General Ohiozoba O. Ehiede has been appointed as the pioneer Director of the Directorate. AIG Ehiede, described as a seasoned legal expert with a distinguished service record, is expected to drive the Directorate’s mandate with professionalism and commitment.

IGP Egbetokun said the creation of the Directorate reflects the Force’s commitment to aligning its legal functions with global law enforcement standards, enhancing transparency, professionalism, and efficiency in police legal processes.

He added that consolidating legal functions under one directorate will strengthen the Force’s prosecutorial capacity, improve justice delivery, and bolster public confidence in police operations.
