The Body of Benchers has formally admitted 6,009 new legal practitioners to the Nigerian Bar following the July 2026 Call to Bar ceremonies held at the Body of Benchers Complex in Abuja.

The four-day ceremony commenced on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and ended on Friday, July 10, 2026, marking the formal admission of successful candidates as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Presenting the candidates to the Body of Benchers, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote, certified that the candidates had satisfactorily completed the prescribed course of training and were found fit and proper in learning and character, in accordance with the Legal Education Act.

According to the results presented, over 7,600 candidates sat for the December 2025 Bar Final Examinations. Of the successful candidates, 212 graduated with First Class Honours, 1,216 obtained Second Class Upper Division, 2,958 earned Second Class Lower Division, while 1,617 graduated with a Pass.

Odusote said the 6,009 candidates called to the Bar comprised 6,000 successful candidates from the December 2025 Bar Final Examinations, two backlog candidates from the February 2025 Bar Finals, and seven candidates from previous Call to Bar exercises.

She congratulated the new lawyers, describing their Call to Bar as a major milestone in their professional journey, and urged them to uphold integrity, excellence, professionalism and service to humanity throughout their careers.

The Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, who formally admitted the candidates to the Bar, charged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity and professional ethics.

Akpomudje urged the new lawyers to embrace mentorship under experienced legal practitioners, stressing that continuous learning, humility and diligence are essential to building a successful career in the legal profession.

He cautioned them against the “get-rich-quick” mentality, warning that sustainable success at the Bar must be built on hard work, ethical conduct and commitment to professional values.

The Body of Benchers Chairman also warned against the improper use of “Barrister” as a prefix before names, stating that it is not a professional title to be used in that manner.

He further condemned the practice of aspirants wearing full legal attire, including wig and gown, and circulating photographs on social media before being formally called to the Bar, describing such conduct as unethical.

The admission of 6,009 new lawyers in one Call to Bar exercise has also renewed conversations about the growing number of entrants into Nigeria’s legal profession and the increasingly competitive legal-services market.

With thousands of lawyers admitted annually, newly called practitioners are expected to compete for limited opportunities in law firms, corporate legal departments, public institutions, the judiciary, academia and other sectors.

The development again highlights longstanding concerns over young lawyers’ welfare, inadequate remuneration, unemployment and underemployment within the profession.

Observers say the expanding number of lawyers may also lead many new wigs to explore careers outside conventional legal practice, including technology, compliance, finance, business, public administration, politics and policy work.

The Nigerian Law School assured the Body of Benchers that it would continue to uphold the ethics, standards and integrity of the legal profession through rigorous legal education and professional training.

The Call to Bar remains the final stage of legal training in Nigeria. Candidates who complete the Nigerian Law School programme, pass the Bar Final Examinations and are certified fit in learning and character are formally admitted to the Nigerian Bar before enrolment at the Supreme Court as legal practitioners.

The Body of Benchers is the statutory body responsible for the formal admission of qualified law graduates to the Nigerian Bar and the maintenance of professional standards in the legal profession.
