The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid reported moves by some lawmakers to impeach him.

Agbebaku stepped down on Monday, bringing an abrupt end to his leadership of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly.

His resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a post on Facebook.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS. DETAILS LATER,” she wrote.

Adodo-Ebojele did not immediately provide details of the circumstances surrounding the resignation but indicated that further information would be communicated later.

Following Agbebaku’s exit, Yekini Idaiyi, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo II Constituency, was reportedly sworn in as the new Speaker of the House.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker when the eighth Assembly was inaugurated in June 2023.

His tenure had previously been marked by internal tensions within the House.

In May 2024, Agbebaku suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers of the Assembly.

At the time, he reportedly linked the alleged impeachment move to external political influence and also raised claims that charms and ritual items were being brought into the Assembly complex.

The suspended lawmakers were described as allies of former Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, who is also politically aligned with former governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Agbebaku’s resignation now marks another major leadership change in the Edo legislature, with attention shifting to the circumstances behind his departure and the emergence of Idaiyi as his reported successor.

Further details on the resignation are expected from Agbebaku’s camp and the Edo State House of Assembly.
