The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Alfred Emberga, on Thursday sacked several principal officers who served under his predecessor, Mr. Hyacinth Dajoh, in a significant reshuffle of the House leadership.
The shake-up saw positions previously held by key officers replaced with lawmakers aligned with the current Speaker, particularly those who reportedly supported him in efforts to remove the former Speaker.
Among those relieved of their duties were Majority Leader Mr. Saater Tiseer, Chief Whip Mr. Peter Ipusu, and Minority Leader Mr. Michael Audu.
In their place, the Speaker appointed Mr. Thomas Dugeri, a pharmacist and former Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Health and Human Services representing Kwande West, as the new Majority Leader. Dr. Abraham Jabi, representing Buruku, was named acting Deputy Majority Leader.
The role of Majority Whip, formerly held by Peter Ipusu of Katsina-Ala West, went to Cyril Ikong of Oju, who had been suspended for allegedly opposing the former Speaker. Dr. Simon Gabo of Mata was appointed Deputy Majority Whip.
On the minority side, Mr. Abu Umoru of Apa, another suspended member linked to opposition against the former Speaker, was appointed acting Minority Leader, with Cephase Dyako of Konshisha as acting Deputy Minority Leader. Mr. Samuel Jiji of Logo became acting Minority Whip, while Moses Egbodo of Obi was named acting Deputy Minority Whip.
The leadership changes followed a motion moved by former Deputy Majority Leader Mr. Douglas Akya of Makurdi South during plenary. Akya argued that, being from the same local government as the Speaker, it was morally appropriate to step aside and allow for the appointment of new principal officers. The motion was seconded by Mr. Cyril Ikong, who described it as timely and necessary.
Speaker Emberga subsequently put the motion to a vote, with members unanimously approving the dissolution of the previous leadership to pave the way for new appointments.
