The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the new Chief Judge is to replace Justice Iorhemen Hwande, who is expected to leave the service on Oct. 26, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70. Gov Samuel Ortom’s letter requesting for the approval was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Titus Uba, with Mr Paul Biem (PDP/Ukum), moving the motion for the confirmation of the nominee. Biem, who described the nominee as “a highly respected jurist”, urged his colleagues to confirm his appointment because he was “a man of honour “. The motion was seconded by Mr Stephen Tyochir, (PDP/Gwer East), who also testified to the sound moral and academic credentials of the jurist. Uba confirmed the nominee’s appointment after a unanimous voice vote endorsed it. Born on March 2, 1958 in Taraku, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue, the new Chief Judge attended the University of Lagos where he bagged a Bachelor of Law degree in 1982, and was called to the bar in 1983. Meanwhile, the House has dissolved the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC). Moving the motion for the dissolution, the House Majority Leader, Mr Avine Agbom (PDP/Makurdi North), said that the motion was sequel to a letter from the Secretary to the State Government requesting the dissolution.
