Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mohammed Dele Belgore, SAN, has declared support for Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, in the race for President of the Nigerian Bar Association, saying the Association is at a defining moment and must choose between establishment politics and a new direction.

Belgore, in a statement, said the NBA currently stands at a crossroads where lawyers must decide whether to continue with what he described as the familiar cycle of establishment politics and incremental change, or embrace fresh leadership.

According to him, Akangbe represents the new direction the Bar needs.

He described Akangbe as a candidate of ideas, courage and renewal, adding that he is not the establishment candidate.

“Yemi is not the establishment candidate. Yemi is the candidate of ideas, courage, and renewal,” Belgore said.

He stated that Akangbe speaks to the frustrations of many lawyers who believe the NBA has moved too far away from the values it was created to uphold.

Belgore also said Akangbe’s message appeals to a generation of young lawyers who want an Association that is more inclusive, responsive and relevant.

He noted that the election is not merely about who becomes NBA President, but about the kind of Bar lawyers want to build.

According to him, the NBA must become bold enough to challenge convention, independent enough to speak truth to power and visionary enough to prepare the legal profession for the future.

Belgore said lawyers who believe the Association needs fresh leadership instead of familiar faces, fresh ideas instead of old formulas, and courage instead of complacency, should see Akangbe as the clear choice.

He said the time had come for a different kind of leadership in the NBA.

“The time for a different kind of leadership is now,” he added.
