*As NBA Mourns Loss of Distinguished Lawyer and Public Servant

The Bayelsa State Government has announced the sudden passing of Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on Thursday, 11th December 2025, at the age of 60.

According to a statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Governor Douye Diri has declared a three-day State Mourning in honour of the late Deputy Governor, effective from Friday, 12th December 2025, and has ordered all flags to fly at half-mast.

“The Deputy Governor was active and carrying out official duties earlier in the day. He collapsed while proceeding to a scheduled meeting within his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead,” the statement said.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s death is described as a great loss to the government, the people of Bayelsa State, and the nation. An accomplished public servant, he previously served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, and Deputy Governor since 2020.

Governor Diri expressed heartfelt condolences to the Deputy Governor’s wife, (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo,Esq their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and all citizens of the state. He prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the family and the people of Bayelsa, adding, “May his gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Lord.”

Also, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, also mourned the Deputy Governor’s death, describing it as a painful loss to his family, the government, the legal community, and the nation. “Senator Ewhrudjakpo was not just a public servant; he was also a lawyer who carried the values of our profession into his work in government. He served with dignity, a calm spirit, and a clear commitment to justice and development,” the NBA statement read.

The NBA extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Diri, the Government and people of Bayelsa State, and the late Deputy Governor’s family, praying for strength, comfort, and peace. They described Ewhrudjakpo as a gentleman in public life, a dependable lawyer, and a leader dedicated to his people, noting that his passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of serving with purpose.

Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo will be remembered for his humility, steady leadership, and unwavering dedication to public service.
