Following armed robberies on banks in Otukpo, Benue State last week, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all commercial banks in the state to temporarily operate from 8am to 2pm daily as a security precaution.

The revised operating hours were announced in a communique issued after an emergency meeting between CBN representatives and bank executives in Makurdi.

According to reports, unknown gunmen had last Friday attacked some banks in Otukpo town, killing several people including security agents. The robbers also reportedly carted away millions of naira during the brazen attacks.

To forestall further incidents, the CBN and bankers committee resolved that banks statewide will now open at 8am and close by 2pm from Monday to Friday. The reduced hours take effect immediately until January 30, 2024 when the security situation will be reviewed.

The temporary measure aims to enhance security around banks and limit exposure to violent attacks as seen in Otukpo last week. Stakeholders hope the revised operations will reduce risks to both staff and customers across Benue State.

The CBN communique directed strict compliance by all banks.
